Kimberley Jurens is an exceptional resource to all professional flute and piccolo players. Her extensive training and experience makes her one of the top flute technicians across Canada and an unbelievable local resource to musicians on Vancouver Island. Her servicing and repairs are always performed efficiently and with attention to detail. The work is done in a timely manner and at a reasonable rate. She works closely with the owner to build a long term relationship. She takes the time to listen to all concerns before starting repairs and gives a detailed explanation about the work that was completed. As a working professional musician, I rely on a highly qualified technician to keep my instruments in performance ready condition. Kimberley Jurens is the only Canadian technician I trust with my instruments and receives my highest recommendation.
- Allison Miller (Principal Flute, Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra)
For over thirty years I have played Principal Flute in the Victoria Symphony and during all that time (and a few years before) I’ve done my own padding and maintenance. At one point I was lazy and sent my flute off to the most highly respected person I could find for a repad and the flute came back unplayable and with damage to the toneholes. A few years ago Kimberley Jurens moved to Victoria. At one point mid-season my flute needed a fair bit of work and I didn’t have the time to work on, so I brought it to Kim, who invited me to watch her as she worked on it. As she worked, we talked, and I could see how thorough, meticulous, and careful a technician Kim was. Kim has such a high regard and love for flutes and her craft, she would never do anything to harm an instrument.
Her attitude is very conservative, and she would never alter anything unless necessary. For example, I recently overhauled my flute, and consulted Kim on a number of issues. The answer was almost always, “no, I’d leave that as it is”. As I got to know her better I have been continually impressed by her knowledge, philosophy, and dedication to flute repair. When Kim works on a flute, you can be sure it will come back playing better. We are very lucky to have in Victoria someone who in my opinion is second to none when it comes to flutes, someone who I can put my complete trust in when I don’t have time or when there is a repair that I don’t feel confident in doing myself. Most flutists don’t work on their own instruments, and have to put their trust in a technician; I can’t recommend Kim highly enough.
