Each instrument manufacturer assigns terms like "student", "step up", "intermediate", "advanced", "pre-professional" and "professional" to their various instruments. This is meant to be a helpful guide for players and buyers, but more often than not it's just confusing.
At KJWR Inc. categories for service/repair are based on how the instrument needs to be serviced/repaired. Items that determine this are: the type of pads, the tolerances of the mechanism, optional keys, and to some degree the materials the instrument is made from.
The reason for this is because these are the factors that determine how much time it will take to make an instrument play its best.
Below are some examples of makes and models and how they fit into each category in terms of service and repair.
