Health & Safety - A commitment to education

SARS-CoV-2 & COVID-19 Protocols at KJWR

The SARS-CoV-2 & COVID-19 situation continues to evolve.

The following protocols are currently in place at KJWR.  As recommendations by the government and health authorities change, this page will reflected those changes.

Health and safety should be paramount in all repair shops.

This means  following CCOHS, OHSA, and WHMIS guidelines and being committed to continuing health and safety education.

As someone with a compromised immune system, Kim takes health and safety education (including correct use of PPE) extremely seriously, both professionally and personally. If you have questions or concerns please contact KJWR.

Kim / KJWR has taken the following additional educational steps to help protect both clients (and herself):

  • Infection Control and Prevention basics for Health Care Workplaces

(taken 2020) A St. John Ambulance course designed for healthcare (and similar) environments. Instrument Repair Shops are very similar to healthcare environment in terms of infection control.

  • Infection Control for musical Instruments  (I.C.I.)  (taken 2020)

This specific education platform was designed to address the needs of instrument repair.

This is an ongoing program, lead by various virology specialists, (currently) already consists of over 5 hours of online seminars  and Q&A, as well as a large volume of additional written content.

Drop Off and Pick Up Protocols (Local and Out of Town)

Local Clients (Drop Off)

  • All Clients are asked to fill out a "Local Drop Off Form" prior to arriving at KJWR. The form can be emailed in, or included with the instrument at drop off (Please do not place the form in the case, or in the soft cover)

  • Upon arrival , clients will place their instrument along with their form (if not emailed in) in the blue "Safe Drop" bin provided at the front door of KJWR. Please make sure the Local Form is loose - the idea is that  your instrument information, as well as your contact information is accessible, without opening the case/case cover.

  • All instruments will undergo a 72 hour "intake quarantine" , which starts at drop off.  Instruments will only be assessed after this 72 hour period is over.

  • If you require a loaner/short term rental (flute only at this time), KJWR has a limited number of these available.  All loaners are cleaned and quarantined week between client, so please contact Kim in advance to see if one is available to be booked for your appointment.  There is a nominal per day charge for loaners.

Out of Town Clients (Shipping)

  • For instruments sent in using commercial courier (Canada Post, Purolator, FedEx, UPS etc), very little has changed.  All shipped instruments still require the "Shipping Form" to be filled out and emailed in (a hard copy can also be included with the instrument, if possible) .

  • The 72 hour "intake quarantine" is still in place for shipped instruments, however this starts from the tracking information time stamp. For most instruments, this means there is typically only 12-24 hours of quarantine remaining once it arrives at KJWR, so there should be little, if any change in repair timelines/ turnaround time.

Please do NOT select next day shipping at this time

Shipping companies are overwhelmed right now, and are generally not guaranteeing next day delivery. Also, because your instrument requires quarantine time, it makes sense to save a few dollars, and select 2-3 day service.

Safe Drop  & Signature information

Because KJWR is still operating under basically "full quarantine" , and the shop is located onsite, there's always someone here to receive packages. This is important for clients to know, since couriers are currently doing "zero contact" deliveries. This means that they are not collecting signatures.
When arranging to send your instrument back, you will be contacted to confirm if you would like your instrument:

  • Delivered to your standard address (keeping in mind that right now, due to "COVID-19 zero contact rules" they will knock, and leave the package - so you'll need to watch for it).*
  • Delivered to an alternate address.
  • Delivered directly to your local post office for pick up.

*Normally all packages sent from KJWR require a signature and are clearly labelled "do not safe drop" - which ensures they must physically be received by a person, not left unattended at a location (e.g. outside a front door). KJWR is not responsible for delivery policies of shipping services.
